Bible Reading for: December 22

Hebrews 1-6

God’s Word cuts through all the lies and self-deception we have put in place to hide the ugly truth from ourselves. Be afraid brother for all will be revealed.

I’m going to keep it short today guys. I’ve been letting myself get a little long winded lately. We read in Hebrews today. There is, of course, much that could be said, but I have latched on to the following verse for the focus of today’s post.

Hebrews 4:12-13 ESV
“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.”

I see two separate ideas in these two verses. First is the notion that God’s Word is more than just a quaint collection of stories pasted into a book. God’s Word is more than history, poetry, prophecy, and Law. God’s Word is living and active; it can cut a man down to the center of his being. In our time reading the Bible together, I have found God’s Word does exactly that. His Word cuts through all the lies and self-deception I have put in place to hide the truth from myself. Now I put these things in place because I think I am hiding the truth from others, but the fact is, I am hiding from myself. God’s Word strips away all the lies and I stand revealed before it.

The second idea is related to the first. We must give an account of ourselves on the day that we stand before our Creator. The action of His active and powerful sword means that on that day, we will not be able to hide the truth from God, others, or ourselves. We will be laid bare for all to see. I tremble at the thought. What will be revealed about you? Not only does God judge your actions and your words, He judges your thoughts and even the intentions of your thoughts.

We humans like to think that the only thing on which we will be judged is our actions. This is a false assumption. We will be judged right down to our miserable thoughts. Scary isn’t it? Brother, accepting Christ is just the first step. We must continue in all earnestness to travel down the road of sanctification. Every day we must become more like Him. It is only by reading God’s Word on a daily basis, kneeling in prayer before our King, and responding to the movement of the Holy Spirit within our hearts, that even our thoughts and intentions can be transformed.

You are a new creature in Christ. You have been given more than just a new suit to wear. You are brand new all the way from the tips of your fingers down to your deepest thoughts. “Christian” is not a coat you wear, but who you are. Do the work necessary to complete the transformation. Do not simply sit barely on the wet side of baptism. Start striding down the road toward your perfection in Christ. Don’t wait. All will be revealed and sooner than you think!

  1. I fear the day of judgement without Christ there to stop the wrath of God. It’s only 5:45 am and I fear the judgement of the things I have thought already this morning. How can my mind wonder so much while reading the word of God? Oh what a wretched man, praise God for grace and mercy.
