Bible Reading for: November 17

Acts 1-3

It is the Power of the Holy Spirit working in the lives of God’s faithful children that opens hearts and minds to truth and leads the lost to salvation.

Well, today we get started in the book of Acts! Acts was written by Luke, a physician and companion of Paul. Here, at the beginning of Acts, we see that this “book” is a letter written to a man named Theophilus and references an earlier “book” which would be the Gospel of Luke. Luke wrote a first volume to Theophilus, the Gospel of Luke, which detailed the birth of Christ through His earthly ministry, crucifixion, and ultimately his ascension into Heaven. This second book, “Acts of the Apostles”, picks up the story from there, and tells a little of how the “good news” was first spread by the Apostles – including Paul.

What struck me as I read along is how few were the numbers of believers at the start of the Church and how quickly they grew once they received the Holy Spirit. Take a look.

Acts 1:15 ESV
“In those days Peter stood up among the brothers (the company of persons was in all about 120) …”

The size of the church immediately following the ascension of Christ was about 120 people. That is a small Church. Shortly thereafter, the Holy Spirit was given to the Church, and wonderful things started to happen. These believers started speaking the truth of Jesus Christ and they were heard and understood in the language of the listeners. A man who once was rather uneducated and fumbling in his ways, suddenly became a powerful speaker.

Acts 2:38-41 ESV
“And Peter said to them, “Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself.” And with many other words he bore witness and continued to exhort them, saying, “Save yourselves from this crooked generation.” So those who received his word were baptized, and there were added that day about three thousand souls.”

The Holy Spirit powers the growth of the Church. You and I have no more power to save than Peter had. We will never save anyone with a good argument or turn of phrase. We will not cause one person to accept Christ through our efforts. It is the Holy Spirit working in the life of a Lost person who calls them to hear the message of salvation. It is the Holy Spirit working in the life of a follower of Christ who gives them the strength, courage, and even words, to speak the truth of salvation. Even language provides no barrier to the Holy Spirit in spreading the good news of Christ. With the power of the Holy Spirit, over three thousand people came to understand their need for a savior and accepted Christ as their Lord in mere moments.

Today in America, the Church is shrinking. Is this because the Holy Spirit no longer works? No brothers, it is because the American Christian no longer works. Peter and the other followers of Christ gave complete control of their lives over to God. With such obedient and humble hearts, the Holy Spirit worked miracles. Do you have the Holy Spirit residing in you? Is it working in you? If not, it may be because you have not relinquished complete control of your life to Him. Is that right? Do you still attempt to keep some control over your life? If so it is a clear impediment to the potential the Holy Spirit offers every Christian.

Don’t miss out brothers. Don’t settle for less by claiming some control. Let go and be obedient. Allow God to use you for His glory and great purpose.
