Bible Reading for: August 1

Isaiah 59-63

The world is an ever-darkening place. As part of God’s family, you are a shining light. You are to shine the light of Christ as a beacon to the Lost.

I think we often forget that much of what the Apostles had to say in the New Testament was built upon that which was said in the Old Testament. Isaiah was much quoted by the New Testament since he foretold of Christ’s coming. In today’s reading a portion of a verse reminded me of something the Apostle Paul said.

Isaiah 59:17 ESV
“He put on righteousness as a breastplate, and a helmet of salvation on his head;…”

This breastplate of righteousness and helmet of salvation are mentioned by Paul in Ephesians where he speaks of putting on the whole armor of God.

Ephesians 6:13-18 ESV
“Therefore take up the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand firm.  Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace.  In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one;  and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,  praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication.”

It is important to remember that the New Testament is not a new theology, it is a continuation of Old Testament theology. The Apostles are not making up new ideas and new rules, they are proclaiming the fulfillment of God’s promises.

Those promises include us gentiles who submit to the authority of Christ. How great and wonderful it is to be adopted into this eternal family. As children of God Almighty, the glory of the Lord has risen upon us.

Isaiah 60:1-3 ESV
Arise, shine, for your light has come,
and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you.
For behold, darkness shall cover the earth,
and thick darkness the peoples;
but the Lord will arise upon you,
and his glory will be seen upon you.
And nations shall come to your light,
and kings to the brightness of your rising.

God’s glory is upon you in the form of His Holy Spirit. His light shines within you. You are to be a light to the Lost who are covered in darkness. Are you letting your light shine before men? I hope so brothers. I hope so.

Vivere Victorem! (Live Victorious!)

Your brother and servant in Christ,

Dying to self, living to serve!
